He heard the preaching of John Wesley in England and travelled to the American colony to minister, arriving in Savannah in 1769〔http://www.sip.armstrong.edu/Methodism/wesley.html〕 and preaching at what is now Trinity United Methodist Church,〔http://www.trinity1848.org/History〕 the first and oldest Methodist church in the city. His ambition was to minister to the black community but in this he was unsuccessful. Later, he ran a school in Marlborough, England, where the minister William Jay entered in 1785.
